The Jewish presence in Euboea has very deep roots, dating back to the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem in 586 BCE, and was mainly concentrated in the area of Oreoi and later in Chalkida. The Jews of Euboea developed commercial activity, particularly in the wine trade. During the Occupation, the Jewish community of Chalkida was almost entirely saved, thanks to the solidarity of the locals and the courageous stance of Metropolitan Grigorios. Today, it stands as a testament to the centuries-long Jewish presence in the Hellenic region.
